Why Did Amey Khopkar Lash Out at Digpal Lanjekar? “I’ve Stayed Silent on Films About Maharajas, But Some Need to Be Brought Down a Notch”

Amey Khopkar expressed strong anger towards Marathi director Digpal Lanjekar, stating that some producers have become too arrogant and need to be “brought down.” Here’s a detailed look at the issue. On January 30, two Marathi films are set to release simultaneously in theaters. One is Digpal Lanjekar’s Ranpati Shivaray – Swari Agra, a historical film, and the other is Punah Ekda Sade Made Teen, directed by Ankush Chaudhary. Amey Khopkar, who is one of the producers of Punah Ekda Sade Made Teen, expressed sharp displeasure over this clash, which could hurt the prospects of one or both films.

At a recent event, Khopkar said, “I want to express my protest. Other producers remain silent, but I will not. I will speak up. The issue is that I have changed the release date of Punah Ekda Sade Made Teen three times to accommodate other films so they could get theater space and run for two to four weeks. But suddenly, Digpal Lanjekar’s historical film, originally scheduled for February 16, announced its release date as January 30 without informing or consulting anyone.”Khopkar added, “The next day, I called Digpal Lanjekar, and he asked, ‘Is this your film?’ I didn’t understand what he meant by that.
Then he said it was the distributor’s decision. I told him the distributor has nothing to do with this; the release date is decided by the producer. I asked him to change the date as his is a big film and deserves to run well. I had announced my date earlier. I told him this and requested him to inform me properly. But till now, Digpal has neither called me back nor answered my calls.
I let the matter go, but I object to this strongly. I have stayed silent because it’s a historical film on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Marathi producers generally don’t speak up, but some producers have really become arrogant. They need to be brought down a notch, and there should be a ban on their actions.”Khopkar also questioned, “Should the hard work of those who worked on our film go to waste?” So far, there has been no official response from Digpal Lanjekar regarding this matter.
