“If the Story Demands It, You Have to Be Prepared”: ‘Jai Malhar’ Fame Isha Keskar Speaks Out on Role Selection and Objectification

Actress Isha Keskar, who shot to widespread fame for her iconic portrayal of ‘Banu’ in the hit Marathi mythological serial Jai Malhar, has sparked a significant industry conversation following a candid recent interview. The actress spoke out directly regarding the expectations of directors and producers, drawing a sharp line between artistic vulnerability and corporate objectification.
Known for her powerful performances in serials like Mazhya Navryachi Bayko and Lakshmirachya Paulani, as well as the film Sarala Ek Koti, Keskar shared her uncompromising filter for choosing scripts.
Artistic Commitment vs. Unnecessary Exposure
When questioned about her criteria for selecting on-screen roles, Keskar emphasized that her perspective centers entirely on narrative substance. She stated:
“I think very differently while choosing roles. If the story is needed, you will also have to take off your clothes. If you are an artiste, you have to be prepared for such a situation… You have to be able to do justice to your role.”
However, the actress quickly clarified the difference between serving a genuine plotline and being utilized merely for visual attraction, noting that she has walked away from projects attempting to exploit female actors:
“Often, even when there is no need for flashy scenes in the film, such scenes are bombarded. I had one or two such projects. I was told that I would have some swimming scenes and I knew it didn’t need to be in the story. But it was going to be just an objectification attraction.”
A Firm Stance Against Objectification
Keskar concluded with a strong warning to filmmakers who prioritize superficial allure over authentic writing:
“If you’re using me because I’m a woman, you’re using me like this. If you ask me to do such a scene even when the story is not needed, then I will never stand at your door again.”
A Growing Cinematic Footprint
Beyond her household status on television, Isha Keskar remains a prominent figure on social media, commanding a massive fan following. Her strict professional boundaries come at a time when she continues to expand her portfolio in the mainstream Marathi film industry, proving that her career longevity is built on substance rather than compromise.
