Sonali Kulkarni Speaks Out Against Parental Impatience: “What’s the Use of Punishing a Child?”

Actress Sonali Kulkarni recently took to social media to share a distressing encounter she witnessed during a flight, using the platform to urge parents to prioritize their children’s needs over public image. Through a video posted on her Instagram, she detailed an incident involving a struggling mother and her crying toddler.
Kulkarni recalled seeing a one-and-a-half-year-old child who appeared to be in significant distress, likely due to ear pain from the cabin pressure. Despite the child’s continuous crying, the parents initially kept the toddler restrained between seats. When Sonali offered to help or hold the baby to relieve the overwhelmed mother, the situation took a heartbreaking turn.
A Plea for Compassion
According to Sonali, once the mother finally picked up the child, her patience snapped when the crying didn’t stop. The actress witnessed the mother strike the child and attempt to suppress their cries.
“Children’s bodies are different; their pains are their own. Is it not our responsibility as adults to protect and comfort them? Is it more important to worry about your self-image than the needs of that child?”

Breaking the Stigma of “Public Embarrassment”
Sonali’s message focused on the unnecessary shame parents feel when their children are vocal in public spaces. She highlighted several key points for parents and onlookers:
- Physical Limitations: Infants cannot communicate ear pain or physical discomfort through words; crying is their only tool.
- Ask for Help: Rather than becoming overwhelmed or resorting to punishment, Sonali encouraged parents to accept assistance from those around them.
- Prioritize the Child: She challenged the idea that a crying child is an “embarrassment,” noting that a child’s well-being should always outweigh a parent’s concern for their reputation.
Summing up the experience, Kulkarni questioned the logic of “torturing or punishing” a child for a physical reaction they cannot control, calling for a more empathetic approach to parenting in high-stress environments.
