Maharashtra Forms Panel to Address Marathi Films’ Screening Challenges in Multiplexes

In response to concerns raised by Marathi filmmakers regarding limited screening opportunities in multiplexes across Maharashtra, the state government has established a 21-member committee to study the issue and propose solutions within 45 days. The committee, chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary (Appeals & Security), Home Department, includes representatives from the Marathi film fraternity, multiplex owners and management, members of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal, police and cultural affairs officials, and the Managing Director of Film City.
This decision was taken during a meeting held on October 6, chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister (Urban Development), and attended by film producers, distributors, and major multiplex chain representatives.Marathi filmmakers voiced several demands, including reserving at least one screen in every multiplex exclusively for Marathi films, extending the annual number of screening days from 112 to 180, and reducing ticket prices from ₹250 to ₹100 to make regional cinema more accessible. They also proposed that trailers of Marathi films be screened before other movies to boost visibility and attract wider audiences.
However, multiplex owners expressed concerns, stating that some Marathi films do not attract sufficient viewership to justify longer runs. They noted that commercially successful Marathi titles already receive extended screenings, and mandating reserved screens could limit their operational flexibility. The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized the importance of promoting Marathi cinema on par with Hindi films. He highlighted the need for better marketing and stronger audience engagement to support the industry’s sustainable growth.
The newly formed committee will analyze the challenges faced by Marathi filmmakers in securing multiplex screens and related issues, submitting its recommendations to the government within 45 days.Meghrajraje Bhosale, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal, welcomed the initiative, stating, “This is a much-needed step by the state government. It will help frame effective policies for Marathi film screenings and multiplex exhibition. Every multiplex should reserve at least one screen for Marathi films, allowing them to run for one to two weeks.”
