BMC Elections: Tejaswini Pandit’s Post Sparks Debate on Ink and Democracy

Marathi actress Tejaswini Pandit’s recent post after casting her vote in the BMC elections has stirred significant discussion online. Along with proudly declaring her vote for the Marathi community, she took a pointed jab at the ink used to mark voters’ fingers, questioning whether the ink or democracy itself will fade away.Tejaswini, known for her bold statements, shared a photo showing the ink mark on her finger and wrote passionately about her roots.

She said, “I was born in Maharashtra, raised speaking Marathi. It is on this language that many have built their lives. If my language survives, my work will be recognized, and I will exist. Today’s vote is for the Marathi man whose blood burns with pride and whose heart beats for Maharashtra. Jai Maharashtra.” She ended her post with a thought-provoking line: “Let’s see if the ink on that marker will go away this year.”Her words come amid widespread allegations during the municipal elections that the traditional indelible ink is being replaced by marker pens, which can be easily wiped off.

Many voters complained on social media that the ink on their fingers disappeared shortly after voting, raising fears of possible multiple voting and electoral malpractice.Political leaders, including Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s Raj Thackeray and Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray, have condemned these practices, calling it an “erasure of democracy” and warning against the misuse of power.

The State Election Commission has responded by ordering an inquiry into the ink’s quality and the rumors surrounding it. Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare emphasized that attempts to wipe off ink to confuse voters are wrong and undermine the democratic process. This controversy has sparked a larger debate about the integrity of the elections and the trust voters place in the system, making Tejaswini Pandit’s post a reflection of the anxieties many feel about the future of democracy in Maharashtra.
