Marathi Film Manache Shlok Renamed Tu Bol Na After Public Outcry; Re-Release Scheduled for Tomorrow

Following widespread protests across Maharashtra, especially in Pune, the Marathi film Manache Shlok has been renamed Tu Bol Na. The film is set to re-release on Thursday under its new title. Several religious organizations had objected to the original title Manache Shlok, citing it as offensive to religious sentiments because it is a sacred term associated with the revered Saint Ramdas Swami’s text.In Pune, multiple screenings of Manache Shlok were halted, banners were torn down, and protests were held against the filmmakers. The movie stars well-known Marathi actress and director Mrunmayee Deshpande in the lead role.
On the film’s release day, October 10, religious groups gathered at cinemas across Pune, forcing shows to shut down in protest of the title. The protesting organizations insisted that the film would not be allowed to screen unless the title was changed. The controversy drew the attention of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which emphasized the importance of freedom of expression for artists and producers.
In response to the backlash, the filmmakers have now decided to rename the film.Directed by Mrunmayee Deshpande, Manache Shlok—now Tu Bol Na (meaning “You Speak Up”)—explores themes of the human mind, thoughts, moral dilemmas, and social realities. Many believed that the original religious-sounding title was a philosophical metaphor and a form of artistic expression rather than a religious subject. Despite this, the filmmakers opted for the name change to ease tensions and bring the film back to audiences under its new banner.
