Girija Oak Trolled After Speaking Out on Student Protests, Faces Social Media Backlash

Actress Girija Oak, widely recognized as the ‘National Crush’, has found herself at the center of intense online trolling after sharing posts related to the ongoing student agitation and the recent police lathicharge.

As protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar intensify with demands for systemic education reform and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, numerous prominent figures from Bollywood and the Marathi film industry have voiced their opinions. Girija initially shared Instagram stories expressing support for Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike and the protesting students, while also urging citizens to ensure their names are registered in the voter list, emphasizing that voting is as crucial as peaceful demonstrations and candle marches.

However, her commentary drew swift backlash from a section of netizens. The actress subsequently posted a video displaying screenshots of the hostile Direct Messages (DMs) and comments she received, captioning it, “The good, the bad and the dirty. It’s not even half of the screenshots in my DMs… But now I understand that I can only include 50 photos in Reels.”

While some users questioned her motives and accused her of sharing paid content, others advised the actress to refrain from political commentary altogether. Several followers also declared they were unfollowing her. Despite the online criticism, Girija highlighted the situation to address the harsh reality of social media trolling when public figures express opinions on ongoing national issues.
