“Marathi People Should Not Stop”: Shiv Thakare Offers Free Rides Amid Auto-Taxi Strike Rumors

As the debate over mandatory Marathi for transport drivers intensifies across Maharashtra, popular actor and Bigg Boss star Shiv Thakare has taken a viral stand. With some unions threatening a strike on May 4 to protest the new government regulations, Shiv has literally put himself in the driver’s seat to help the common man.

In a stirring social media post, Shiv announced that he would use his own vehicle to serve as a free shuttle for those stranded by potential protests.

“Stop My Harrier Anywhere”

Shiv shared a picture of his car, a TATA Harrier (MH 27 DK 0909), and invited citizens to flag him down if they are in need. His message to the people of Maharashtra was clear:

“Ram Ram Maharashtra… If taxi and rickshaw drivers go on strike on May 4, look for the TATA Harrier with ‘Jai Maharashtra’ on the back. Stop it anywhere—it is at your service. In the driver’s seat, you’ll find your brother in a saffron turban ready to help. Whatever happens, Marathi people should not stop.”

The Political Backdrop

The gesture comes as Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik pushes forward with a policy requiring all auto and taxi drivers to be proficient in Marathi starting May 1.

While the rule is officially active, the government has provided a “grace period” until August for drivers to learn the language before strict penalties are imposed. Despite the government’s attempt at a soft rollout, some unions remain disgruntled, leading to rumors of a statewide strike on May 4. Minister Sarnaik has maintained a firm position, stating, “If you want to work in Maharashtra, you must know Marathi,” though he noted that no major unions have officially confirmed a protest yet.

Industry Support

Shiv Thakare isn’t the only celebrity weighing in. Several Marathi actors and actresses have voiced their support for the language mandate, arguing that local language proficiency is essential for public service. However, Shiv is the first to take a “direct action” approach by offering his personal vehicle to ensure commuters aren’t inconvenienced.

With his post already gaining massive traction, the actor has solidified his image as a “man of the people,” ensuring that even if the city’s transport hits a snag, the spirit of Maharashtra remains mobile.
