The 72nd National Film Awards ceremony took place on Tuesday, September 22, in Gujarat. Breaking with long-standing tradition, the prestigious event was held outside New Delhi at Ekta Nagar in Kevadia. President Droupadi Murmu presented the honors to the top films and artists of 2024 across various categories. Marathi cinema made a strong mark at the event, with the hit comedy Mukkam Post Bombilwadi winning the National Film Award for Best Marathi Film.
Producer Bharat Shitole received the prestigious Silver Lotus (Rajat Kamal) award from President Droupadi Murmu. The film was written by Madhugandha Kulkarni, who has previously crafted acclaimed National Award-winning films like Harishchandrachi Factory, Elizabeth Ekadashi, Walvi, and Atmapamphlet. Directed by Paresh Mokashi, Mukkam Post Bombilwadi features a star-studded ensemble cast including Prashant Damle, Vaibhav Mangle, Anand Ingle, Advait Dadarkar, Pranav Raorane, Ritika Shrotri, Manmeet Pem, and Geetanjali Kulkarni.
Along with Mukkam Post Bombilwadi, another Marathi film brought home national honors. The movie Gharat Ganapati won in the music category, with singer Abhay Jodhpurkar receiving the Silver Lotus award for Best Male Playback Singer for his performance of the song “Navsachi Gauri Majhi.”
The ceremony also celebrated major achievements in other Indian language industries. The biographical drama Srikanth, produced by Bhushan Kumar, was named the Best Hindi Film. Meanwhile, the Tamil action drama Rayan, written, directed by, and starring Dhanush, won the award for Best Tamil Film. Actor Dhanush also earned a Special Mention from the jury for his performance in the Tamil film Captain Miller.
