When Nana Patekar Fumed at Sonali Kulkarni: “What Do You Think of Yourself?”

Renowned actor Nana Patekar is widely recognized for his unfiltered personality, raw intensity, and outspoken demeanor. While his straightforward style can sometimes spark friction, it stems from a deep dedication to cinema and high expectations from his craft. Actress Sonali Kulkarni recently shared a memorable throwback memory about working with the veteran actor, revealing how an initial fiery argument eventually laid the foundation for an enduring personal bond.
Writing in a column for the Marathi daily Loksatta, Sonali reminisced about her early interactions with Patekar. Long before sharing the frame with him, she had been deeply impressed by his performance as Othello at the NCPA. Years later, when she was offered a film alongside him, she was thrilled until a clash with the project’s producer changed her mind. Displeased with the producer’s unprofessional conduct, Sonali chose to flatly reject the film without giving weight to the director or the star cast.
At the time, Sonali was living in a rented apartment in Mumbai. Having obtained her contact details, Nana Patekar called her directly and instructed her to come over to his residence to read script scenes and begin rehearsals. However, Sonali calmly informed him that she had decided against doing the project.
Her unexpected refusal infuriated the veteran star. Outraged that a young actor would turn down a film featuring him, Patekar lashed out, asking, “What do you think of yourself? Are you old enough to choose films in front of me?”
Despite facing his legendary temper, Sonali stood her ground. She clearly articulated her reasons for rejecting the producer and refused to compromise on her principles. Her honesty, dignity, and firm stand ultimately won Patekar’s respect, transforming an intense argument into a deep, long-lasting professional friendship built on mutual admiration.
