The Marathi entertainment industry has suffered another profound loss. Just days after the passing of veteran actor Nana Patekar, legendary Lavani artist and actress Madhu Kambikar passed away in Pune at the age of 73. According to her daughter-in-law, she breathed her last following a prolonged illness after remaining bedridden for the past few years.
Born on July 28, 1953, in Malegaon Khurd village of the Beed district, Kambikar overcame significant hardships to carve out an illustrious career in the arts. After receiving formal training in Kathak, she officially began her artistic journey in 1973 at Mumbai’s famed New Hanuman Theatre in Lalbaug. She quickly won over audiences with her breathtaking mastery of Lavani and folk dance, eventually playing a instrumental role in bringing rural Maharashtra’s folk heritage to mainstream prominence.
Kambikar’s career spanned over four decades, during which she acted in more than 100 films, making a mark across Marathi and Hindi cinema, theater, and traditional folk dramas. Some of her most memorable cinematic contributions include classic films such as Satichi Punei, Shapit, Hech Majha Maher, Hyoch Navra Pahye, Zapatlela, Ek Hota Vidushak, and Raosaheb. Her exceptional performances in Shapit, Hech Majha Maher, and Raghu Maina earned her critical acclaim and prestigious awards.
Beyond her work on screen, she was a true cultural ambassador for Maharashtra. In 1977, she performed a special dance drama in New Delhi as part of the acclaimed art troupe Maharashtrachi Lokdhara. Dedicated to preserving the traditional art form for future generations, she conceptualized the popular program Sakhi Majhi Lavani, taking traditional Marathi folk performances to international stages across the United States, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Mauritius, while also personally mentoring numerous budding artists.
Characterized by her unmatched grace, expressive stage presence, and deep simplicity, Madhu Kambikar leaves behind an indelible legacy that defined the golden era of Marathi folk and film culture.
