Actress Madhurani Gokhale, known for her powerful roles, recently opened up about her experience playing the iconic Savitribai Phule in the series Mi Savitribai Jotirao Phule during an interview on Mata Katta. Despite the love from audiences, actors often face criticism, but Madhurani chooses to focus only on opinions that matter to her. “I don’t think much about critics. It’s up to me whose opinions I want to take, so I ignore the trolls,” she said. After completing the series Aai Kahan Kya Karta, Madhurani was looking for a meaningful project.
When Satish Rajwade of Star Pravah offered her the role of Savitribai, she felt honored but also hesitant. “It was a big deal for me. I took some time to think if I was ready for it. But after careful thought, I said yes that very evening,” she recalled.Learning that Amol Kolhe would portray Jyotirao Phule eased her concerns. “He approaches such subjects with deep study and gave me books to understand the era better,” she explained. Madhurani immersed herself in the history, the caste system, women’s status, and society of that time to authentically portray the multifaceted Savitribai not just as a revolutionary but also as a poet and compassionate woman.
One of the most striking moments for Madhurani came while filming the promo, when she was hit with a ball of cow dung that settled on her chest. It was a stark, humbling experience that helped her grasp the hardships Savitribai endured. “If I were in her place, I might have run away. But through this role, I wanted to embrace that light and strength.”Though approached for more conventional motherly roles, Madhurani is selective, seeking projects that challenge the audience and provoke thought beyond mere entertainment.
Her recent work includes the theatrical recital Whose Tya Vitthal and the upcoming film Kapuskonda, directed by Sachin Mohite and featuring Sachin Pilgaonkar.Madhurani also shared her desire to break away from being typecast in traditional saree roles. After the series ended, she experimented with new looks to help audiences see her versatility.Reflecting on her career, she believes that good work naturally leads to more opportunities, without heavy reliance on publicity.
