Maharashtra Government’s ‘Chitrapat Rasaswad’ Initiative to Bring Classic Films to the New Generation

Where can you watch old films again, and that too for free? Film enthusiasts now have this opportunity through the ‘Chitrapat Rasaswad’ program launched by the Cultural Affairs Department of the Maharashtra Government. The main aim of this initiative is to preserve the legacy of Marathi cinema by making classic Marathi films accessible to the new generation and allowing cinephiles to experience these timeless movies afresh.As part of the program, a special screening of the historic film Sant Tukaram, produced by Prabhat Film Company in 1936, was held.
The event took place at the Pu. La. Deshpande Kala Academy’s Mini Theatre and received an enthusiastic response from the audience.Cinema is not just a medium of entertainment but also a powerful tool for social change. Cultural Minister Ashish Shelar expressed confidence that ‘Chitrapat Rasaswad’ will help cultivate a discerning audience for quality films. This initiative aims to showcase both classic, historically significant films and thought-provoking, mature movies created by the new generation to the viewers.
Significance of Sant Tukaram:
Sant Tukaram is a Marathi film made in 1936 by the Prabhat Film Company, directed by Vishnupant Damle and Sheikh Fatelal. The film gained international acclaim and was among the top ten films worldwide at the Venice International Film Festival. It was the first Indian film to achieve such recognition. Through this film, audiences got a glimpse of the golden era of Marathi cinema.
Ashish Shelar said, “Many of us have watched excellent films with our parents that instilled values and a sense of nation-building. It is essential to pass on such historically valuable films to the next generation. While progress is important, we must not neglect cultural, sensitive, and positive social development. Keeping this in mind, the government is actively working in the fields of art, literature, culture, theatre, and cinema.”
