True Dedication: Why Mohan Joshi Initially Refused to Play Swami Samarth in Deool Band 2

While writer-director Pravin Tarde’s agrarian spiritual drama Deool Band 2 is rewriting box office records—crossing a massive ₹20 crore mark in just five days behind-the-scenes details have revealed the immense personal struggle of veteran actor Mohan Joshi.

Though audiences today are celebrating Joshi’s triumphant return as the iconic spiritual seer Swami Samarth, the actor had initially completely turned down the sequel due to severe health complications.

When Deool Band 2 was first announced, intense curiosity surrounded the casting of Swami Samarth, a character Joshi had made legendary in the 2015 original. However, behind closed doors, the actor was fighting a quiet, intense medical battle.

Director Pravin Tarde recently revealed the emotional exchange that took place when he initially approached the veteran star:

“Mohan Joshi was deeply unwell when we started planning Deool Band 2,” Tarde shared. “He flatly refused the role of Swami, telling me, ‘I have completely stopped acting.’ I looked at him and asked, ‘How long will you make the audience wait? Because people simply will not accept anyone else in the form of Swami except you.’

The reality was bleak: Joshi had suffered a severe stroke resulting in paralysis, which left him virtually unable to walk or speak clearly. At the time of the initial casting call, the veteran actor could barely manage to walk two steps without assistance.

Moved by Pravin Tarde’s unwavering faith that the film could not be made without him, Mohan Joshi requested a temporary window of time to fight for his recovery. What followed was an incredible, year-and-a-half-long journey of grit and pure artistic dedication:

To combat the speech impairment caused by the paralysis, Joshi practiced his dialogues daily for hours by placing a pencil inside his mouth to regain articulation, clarity, and tongue control. He underwent intensive physical therapy to regain his balance and stance so he could command the screen with the physical dignity required for the character. Production on the film was deliberately kept on hold. Only when Joshi successfully regained his speech and basic mobility did Pravin Tarde officially roll the cameras.

The original 2015 blockbuster, Deool Band, struck a unique chord across Maharashtra by creating an intellectual bridge between a hyper-rational space scientist and the spiritual philosophy of Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj, arguing that the true soul of science is rooted in spirituality.
