Phula: A Haunting Glimpse into the ‘Unsettling Reality’ of Waghya-Murali Tradition

The teaser for the upcoming Marathi film Phula has officially dropped, sparking intense conversation across social media. It opens with the sacred Sanskrit verse “Yatra Naryastu Pujyante, Ramante Tatra Devta” (Where women are honored, divinity blossoms), but immediately pivots to a gritty reality that challenges that sentiment. Narrated by the evocative voice of Subodh Bhave, the teaser has gripped viewers with haunting visuals of chains and scattered turmeric, raising a profound question: how has the world ignored these “flowers” dedicated to God as they turn to dust?

The story dives deep into the Waghya-Murali tradition of Maharashtra, where children are dedicated to the service of Lord Khandoba. The film follows the struggle of an innocent girl born into this culture as she fights for her identity and survival. By weaving in elements of Jagran Gondhal and Tamasha Phad, the narrative captures the raw essence of rural tradition while offering a piercing critique of a spiritual system that often leads to the exploitation of young women.

This project is a testament to the creative drive of the youth of Atpadi, produced by Ajit Shivaji Jadhav and directed by Abhishek Javir. Music plays a central role in the storytelling, featuring a robust album of seven songs with powerhouse vocals from artists like Vaishali Samant, Vaishali Made, and Rohit Raut. With its striking cinematography by Pratap Joshi, Phula is set to challenge audiences when it hits theaters on April 17, serving as a bridge between traditional folk arts and modern cinema.
