Mohan Joshi Reflects on Career in Hindi Film Industry: “Didn’t Make Friends in Hindi, but in Marathi…”

Veteran actor Mohan Joshi, a widely respected figure across Marathi theater, cinema, and television, recently opened up about his decades-long journey in the entertainment industry. Known for his commanding screen presence and memorable villainous performances in hit Hindi films such as Gangaajal, Gunda, Mrityudand, and Gundaraj, the actor shared candid insights during an interview on the YouTube channel Mitra Mahane.

Despite achieving remarkable success in Bollywood, Joshi revealed that he consciously maintained a distance when it came to making personal connections in the Hindi film fraternity. Reflecting on the transactional nature of show business, he remarked that the industry generally salutes “the rising sun.” He noted that while audiences and peers applaud actors when work is abundant, the dynamic shifts significantly once the work dries up. Referring to the later years of legendary figures like A.K. Hangal and Rajesh Khanna, Joshi observed that when an artist no longer has work, few people check on them.

To protect himself from the fickle nature of stardom, Joshi chose to avoid deep friendships within Bollywood, keeping his interactions strictly professional. Instead, he found his most meaningful and lasting personal bonds within the Marathi entertainment industry, citing actors Atul Parchure, Vinod Pandit, Ashok Shinde, and Deepak Karanjikar as his closest confidants.

Recalling the peak phase of his career, Joshi shared a nostalgic memory about his mother. He recounted how she would read a popular film magazine called Cinema each month and proudly underline his name in the release listings. During his busiest years, his name appeared across as many as 28 film listings in a single issue—a testament to his intense work ethic and high demand as an actor.
