Release Postponed: Censor Board Demands Cuts in The Maharashtra Files; Director Reacts to Financial Losses

The highly anticipated theatrical release of the Marathi film The Maharashtra Files has been abruptly postponed. Originally locked to hit screens nationwide today, May 29, 2026, the film’s release has been stalled due to an unexpected delay in securing its clearance certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The Censor Board has reportedly ordered several significant cuts and alterations to key scenes, forcing the filmmakers to miss their long-planned release window and incurring massive financial losses in promotional and distribution overheads.

A Story of the Banjara Community’s Fight for Justice

The Maharashtra Files has generated immense digital traction over the past few weeks, with its raw teaser and trailer sparking intense conversations on social media. The narrative centers heavily on the systemic oppression and the socio-political fight for justice of the marginalized Banjara community.

Responding to the administrative hurdle and the enforced delay, the film’s multi-hyphenate creator, producer-director Sanjeev Kumar Rathod, shared an emotional but defiant statement:

Sanjeev Kumar Rathod: “Our struggle is a lived reality—one that is fought daily by the most deprived classes and the Banjara community. While we face hurdles today, the film will absolutely be seen in theaters by every single citizen of Maharashtra this coming June.”

Heavyweight Ensemble Cast and Musical Alliance

The production features a massive star-studded line-up, blending acclaimed parallel-cinema actors with highly popular regional and national entertainment figures.

  • The Dramatic Core: Fronted by veteran performers including Usha Nadkarni, Mangesh Desai, Veena Jamkar, Sayaji Shinde, and Nagesh Bhosle.
  • The Commercial Elements: Backed by notable guest appearances and promotional tracks featuring Sunny Leone, Sapna Chaudhary, Gautami Patil, and playback singer Mangali.
  • The Soundscape: The musical narrative and background score of the project have been composed by Nitin Sawant, Ajit Ketkar, and Siddharth Kashyap.

The production team has confirmed they are actively working to resolve the Censor Board’s specific objections and are currently re-editing the flagged sequences. A finalized, official release date for the month of June is expected to be announced within the next few days.
