Dedicated Beyond Publicity: The History and Hard Work Behind Maharashtra’s Kalawant Dhol-Tasha Pathak

A recent social media exchange between veteran actor Vidyadhar Joshi and actress Shruti Marathe has reignited widespread discussion regarding the ‘Kalawant Dhol-Tasha Pathak’. While Joshi questioned the performance aspects of the ensemble, Marathe’s spirited response highlighted the deep dedication and rigorous physical preparation required by its members, bringing the squad’s true efforts into the public spotlight.
Formed around 2013–14, the Kalawant Dhol-Tasha Pathak is a specialized troupe created by prominent figures in the Marathi entertainment industry. Driven by a shared reverence for Lord Ganesha and a passion for Maharashtra’s traditional music culture, actors like Siddharth Jadhav, Saurabh Gokhale, Shruti Marathe, Tejaswini Pandit, Anuja Sathe, and Sanskruti Balgude united to experience the festival firsthand. For these celebrities, participating in the troupe is far more than a stunt for public relations or social media visibility; actor Saurabh Gokhale emphasized that all members participate as equal devotees, with Lord Ganesha remaining the sole “superstar.”
The commitment demands significant physical effort and time. Responding to criticism, Shruti Marathe revealed that the artists undergo intensive rehearsal sessions spanning nearly one and a half months leading up to Ganeshotsav. During the eleven-day festival, the troupe performs repeatedly, culminating in a physically demanding, seven-and-a-half-hour procession on the final day of immersion (Visarjan).

The combination of authentic traditional drumming and high-profile celebrity participation has made the troupe enormously popular across social media platforms, with their performance videos going viral each year. Beyond musical grandiosity, the Kalawant Pathak actively engages in meaningful social causes. The group recently honored localized Sahyadri mountain rescue teams and provided them with direct financial assistance. Ultimately, the Kalawant Dhol-Tasha Pathak exemplifies a rare blend of cultural preservation, community service, and disciplined artistry, proving that their presence in Maharashtra’s iconic festival processional culture rests on hard work, sweat, and genuine devotional passion.
