A major legal dispute has erupted between actor Omkar Bhojane and director-producer Milind Kawde over the promotional campaign of their film Afratafari. Represented by noted advocate Aseem Sarode, Bhojane issued a legal notice demanding ₹50 lakh in damages and an unconditional apology from Kawde following derogatory remarks made during a digital interview.
The Allegations Against the Director During an interview regarding the film’s publicity, Kawde allegedly accused Bhojane of skipping promotional events, making extreme comparisons to “seasoned pickpockets” and “habitual liars.” Advocate Sarode stated that Bhojane refrained from issuing the notice before the film’s October 9, 2026 release to avoid harming the movie’s prospects. Clarifying his stance, Bhojane noted that frequent changes in release dates conflicted with his prior commitments, but he still promoted the film by sending teasers and trailers to over 130 personal contacts via broadcast messages. The notice warns of civil and criminal court filings under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Milind Kawde’s Counter-Defense Responding through his lawyer Deepali R. Bohra, Kawde issued a detailed 30-page reply rejecting the ₹50 lakh claim and refusing to apologize. Kawde maintained that his comments reflected broader professional challenges faced by producers regarding actor availability. He clarified that the term “pickpocket” was used in a general context and not aimed directly at Bhojane. Furthermore, Kawde alleged that Bhojane’s delays during shooting, dubbing, and promotional shoots forced the team to use AI-generated posters and cancel key promotional events in Pune.
