The Marathi film Mana Che Shlok is embroiled in a legal dispute and widespread opposition, primarily from right-wing groups objecting to its title. The film’s name references the sacred text of the revered saint Shri Samarth Ramdas Swami Maharaj, sparking controversy over its use. Despite the Bombay High Court clearing the film’s release, the situation in Pune has escalated into turmoil. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti filed a petition claiming that the title Mana Che Shlok hurt Hindu sentiments, arguing that associating a film about live-in relationships with this holy name was disrespectful to Samarth Ramdas Swami.
However, the High Court refused to stay the film’s release, much to the relief of the filmmakers, who publicly welcomed the decision.Nevertheless, protests persisted. During the film’s premiere at a theatre in Kothrud, Pune, right-wing activists disrupted the event, confronting the filmmakers and forcibly stopping the screening. They contended that the film’s title dishonored Samarth Ramdas Swami, leading to the suspension of all Mana Che Shlok screenings in Pune.
This controversy highlights the ongoing tension between freedom of expression and respect for cultural and religious values. While the court has upheld the film’s right to release, opposing groups continue to assert that it offends their religious beliefs, casting uncertainty over the film’s future in Maharashtra.Mana Che Shlok was among the few Marathi films slated for release in October 2025. The backlash intensified after the trailer’s launch, with critics accusing the filmmakers of exploiting Hindu faith by using the name of the sacred text.
The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti demanded an immediate title change and threatened protests if their demands were not met.Following the High Court’s refusal to halt the release, the film’s team issued a statement:
“The Honorable High Court, while hearing the petition to halt the release of the movie Mana Che Shlok, refused to grant a stay. This clears the way for the film’s release. The entire team of Mana Che Shlok welcomes the Court’s decision.
