Veteran actress Usha Nadkarni, renowned for her role as the formidable mother-in-law in the popular television show Pavitra Rishta, continues to work in the acting industry at age 80. Despite her professional success, her personal life has been marked by significant hardship, including childhood violence, family conflicts, and long-term isolation.
Growing up, Nadkarni faced severe physical discipline from her quick-tempered father. In one instance, when she attempted to protect her brother during an altercation, her father attacked her with a sickle, injuring her hand. Despite the injury, she performed in a theater production the following day. Her pursuit of an acting career also met strong opposition from her mother. When Nadkarni insisted on acting, her mother threw her belongings out of the house, forcing her to stay with a friend for a week before her father brought her back home.
In her adult life, Nadkarni faced further personal challenges, including a long-standing separation from her husband. Her demanding shooting schedules led to her mother raising her only son. As a result, her son later joked that his grandmother was his true mother. Her son currently resides abroad.
Since 1987, Nadkarni has lived alone in her Mumbai flat. While initially fearful for her safety, she eventually adapted to living independently without external assistance. Reflecting on her situation, she humorously noted the possibility of dying unnoticed in the middle of the night until neighbors check on her. Through these trials, she maintained her determination to build a career in acting and continues to manage her life independently.
