Airtel is now planning much more than the telecom industry. The CEO, Sunil Bharti Mittal decided to opt for a tough battle against the rising popularity of Reliance Jio by Mukesh Ambani. The telecom company is now planning to expand into the space for TV distribution. Ambani’s Jio took control of the 2 largest operators for cable networks which includes DEN Networks and Hathway Cables & Datacom. Mittal has planned to initiate talks with the Dish TC for a merger with the DTH business that is under the umbrella of Airtel Digital TV.
Currently, the talks are in their exploratory stage and the main idea is consolidation of operations while fighting against the rising market expanse of Reliance Jio. Together, Dish TV and Airtel Digital TV can be a massive giant with distribution reaching more than 38 million people and 61 percent DTH Market Share in the country. During their reply to the ET query, the spokesperson for ET query mentioned that as policy, one cannot comment over the market speculation.
Last year in the month of March, Dish TV managed to complete a merger with Videocon d2h. Previously, Airtel tried to sell the DTH business it owns to Tata Sky. However, the 2 parties failed to reach a proper agreement.
